10 Vital Things to Consider When Migrating an Oracle EBS(R12) Environment

Cloud technology can accommodate all the on-premises solutions of an enterprise, and its flexibility, scalability, and ease of use make it popular among businesses. Cloud is a new trend that allows enterprises to integrate, combine, and create hybrid solutions. It is interesting and important to be aware and stay updated about Cloud offerings from different vendors. For organizations that are planning to or have decided to migrate from E-Business Suite (EBS) to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), here are ten things to consider

  1. OCI Service Portfolio. Research new features that could simplify designing and determining applications and infrastructure .
  2. Architecture and Topology of Current Environment. Collect all the information that directly affects architecture such as nodes, concurrent users, batch jobs, etc. This will help with deciding the requisite services and provide an approximate cost for such services. Check what options are available for database (DB) systems on OCI, and understand the differences between DB on Compute, Bare Metal, and Exadata.
  3. Deployment Models at Oracle Cloud. Consider single and multi-region deployment (along with public, private, hybrid options). Assess the security, governance, and sensitivity of the data, and select the deployment model that is appropriate. Additionally, consider aspects such as budget and duration (i.e., long, or short term).
  4. Operating System Compatibility. Compare your current operating system (e.g., binary compatible, cross-platform migration) with the operating systems that Cloud supports. Currently OCI supports Linux, Windows, and Solaris (recently introduced).
  5. Product Licensing. Check licensing criteria with your Oracle sales representative because Oracle provides discounts and reuse of on-premises licenses.
  6. Data Migration. Determine your database size and the options to migrate data securely. Resolve Tech Solutions (RTS) has specialized skills to set up FastConnect and VPNConnect for securely transferring data between customer and Cloud data centers. Depending on feasibility and requirements, we decide which one is the most beneficial and cost effective for your enterprise . Additionally, the minimization of migration downtime must be ensured to give maximum availability for instances.
  7. EBS Cloud Manager. Use the EBS Cloud Manager to manage multiple EBS instances centrally and to provide options to run DB on Exadata and RAC. This tool is available only on Oracle Cloud.
  8. Security of EBS Instance Running on Cloud. Implement a demilitarized zone (depending on your architecture and if external access is needed). Additionally, Oracle provides transparent data encryption at a DB level, encryption of data either at rest, in storage or in transition, and also multiple copies of files stored in object/archive storage. Also, Bastion Host provides an extra layer of security that prevents direct access to application and DB servers.
  9. Integrate various Oracle or third-party software with SOA Gateway, Workflow Notification mailer setup, and on-Premises Printer integration. Also, Oracle has a partnership with Microsoft, which enables the most common integration—Azure AD with EBS for SSO requirements.
  10. Maintenance of EBS Lifecycle. Update EBS Cloud Manager and its dependent tools to new versions and perform backups regularly. EBS running on OCI also needs patching, CPU updates, and upgrades.

In short, consider the following points when migrating from On-Premises to Oracle Cloud:
